South Carolina Educational Interpreter Credential Requirements

Effective - 2026 K-12 School Year

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the grandfathering rule  or grace period if requirements are not met by the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year?

There is no grace period, and no grandfathering rule.  All requirements must be met to interpret in South Carolina K-12 schools.

Where do I fall if my EIPA score is less than 3.5? What are my options?
Interpreters with EIPA scores less than 3.5 will not be eligible to work as an intepreter in South Carolina K-12 schools. Interpreters are encouraged to prepare and take the EIPA Performance exam as soon as possible to attempt to increase results.

What if I have already taken the EIPA Performance exam, and I'm waiting for my results?

If your test results are pending, you may continue to work while awaiting your results.

How will school districts handle it if they do not have enough interpreters who meet the new state requirements?

Per the Department of Education, several districts have had to hire virtual interpreters over the years when they cannot find an interpreter. Districts will have to continue to utilize those services. In the past, the DoE has recommended that districts needing to use virtual interpreting services consider placing the in-person interpreters in the elementary grades and virtual services in the upper grades.

Where and when can I take the EIPA Written Exam?

SC RID will partner with local EIPA Written test administrators to offer the  exam prior to the beginning of the school year if there is enough interest.
