C/DI Panel: Deaf Perspectives

6:00-7:30 pm

This panel will feature expert advice to both Deaf and hearing interpreters about barriers in the interpreting field and how to work well as a team.  Panelists will share their life experiences navigating the journey to becoming an interpreter and their insight on the benefits of having an interpreter who is a native user of their language. They will discuss how they frame the work of a C/DI with their colleagues and with professionals outside of the interpreting field. Mikey Krajnak, CDI

Mikey Krajnak has been an interpreter for most of his life, and takes pride in his inked appearance and well-kept beard. Growing up in Staten Island, NY with a hearing family, he attended mainstream schools before heading to NTID and Gallaudet for college. His career began at Ohio's Relay Service (pre-VRS) where he struggled to interpret Deaf consumers' signed messages on a laptop while also conveying strong English-based ideas into visual language using TTY. This experience sparked his passion for understanding language deprivation within the Deaf community. He then worked as a Communication Specialist in the Deaf Unit at Westborough State Hospital and Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital in Massachusetts for 13 years. During this time, he obtained certification as a Deaf Interpreter, which he has held since 2010. He has worked with diverse teams of interpreters, both Deaf and hearing, in various settings throughout his career. After retiring from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2018, he now works full-time as a freelance Deaf Interpreter and mentor. Outside of work, he enjoys reading zombie books, tending to his plants, getting tattoos, and having deep discussions about taboo topics.
